WCAG & ADA Digital Accessibility Compliance for Local Governments
The Clock is Ticking!
Large municipalities only have until April 26, 2027 to meet new accessibility requirements (recently extended from April 26, 2026). Smaller localities and “special government districts” have an additional year.
New DOJ Requirements for Government Website Accessibility
The Department of Justice has released new rules requiring state and local government websites, apps, and social media posts to conform with Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA guidelines in order to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
These new regulations apply to all digital content, including:
No Widgets Or Overlays
We do not use or recommend the use of accessibility widgets and overlays. The new DOJ rules apply to “web content” that includes “code or markup that defines the content’s structure, presentation, and interactions“. Widgets and overlays cannot edit the underlying code, structure, and interactions on your site in a way that makes it WCAG conformant.
..public entities will need to prepare for compliance during the two or three years before the compliance date…
